Snarum church (English)

One mile north of Vikersund, Snarum church reigns with roots dating back to the Middle Ages.

The first church in this area was a stave church located a little further north. In 1702 this church was replaced by a timber church located on the opposite side of the road from the original church. The current Snarum church was designed by architect Georg Andreas Bull and inaugurated in 1869. The brick church is a neo-Gothic style long church that seats approx. 230 people.

Here people gather for church holidays and traditions, for worship services, baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals. For a number of years, there has also been an Olsok worship service.

The altarpiece from 1898 depicts «Jesus in Gethsemane», and is painted by Eilif Peterssen. One of the treasures in the church is a catechism tablet from around 1590, with biblical texts in Danish and Latin. At Snarum cemetery you will find the «Russerbauta», the burial place of two unknown soldiers from Russia who died on Holleia in 1944, «in the struggle for freedom».
